Ubaka Hill, drummer, teacher, curator, founder of the Drumsong Institute, Drum Central CoFounder & CoProducer Ubaka Hill  is an internationally known performer, drum teacher, and recording artist.  She is the founder of the Drumsong Institute Museum and Archive of Women's Drumming Traditions based in Catskill, NY.  Ubaka performs solo concerts as well as with her ensemble Shapeshifters.  She is also musical director of the Drumsong Orchestra. She has two albums, "Shapeshifters" and "Dance the Spiral Dance" on the Ladyslipper record label.


Her presence, energy, and insight have been tremendous contributions to the "Happen'ns".  Ubaka Hill is a co-founder, and has co-produced this event in 1998 and since the Happen'n 2006.  Her workshops are powerful and generate group as well as individual percussive enjoyment:



Drumsong, the Art and Spirit of Drumming I for Beginners:  An empowering, fun exploration of the universal language of drumming, rhythm and pulse, time and tone to foster individual ability and self expression.  Focus will be on development and improvement of technique, breathing, concentration, dexterity, and rhythmic vocabulary.  All hand drums and percussion are welcome.


Drumsong, the Art and Spirit of Drumming II (Beyond the Basics):  All levels are welcome.


Drumsong Rhythmic Vocabulary- Intermediate:  Creative composition of original drum songs.  Basic drumming skills required.  We will explore rhythmic vocabulary, improvisation, resonance, musical elements, dynamics, lyrics, time, song structure, texture, and presentation.  DAll percussive and melodic instruments are welcome.
